Are you interested in Learning how to kayak or just improve your skills.  We will go over the parts of a kayak and all equipment used in kayaking and basic kayak safety, paddling techniques, river reading skills and pre-trip planning . We will also be teaching capsize and re-entry drills. Mondays - Thursdays at 10:00 am shuttle, plan to arrive 30 minutes prior, Beginner level, this is a 4 - 5 hour roundtrip.

Cost: $100/pre person, reservations required 5 person min.  If you don't have the minimum number of 5 people to go?  You can do a OPEN sign-up Monday - Thursday 10:00 am shuttle, plan to arrive 30 minutes prior.

Great River Outfitters will provides all neccessary equipment. The actual river depending on the particular age, fitness, experience, interest, and local conditions.

Introduction to Kayaking (Level 1)

Intro to Kayak is a 6 - 8 hour course focusing on skills needed for any type of kayak including but not limited to sit on tops, recreational, folding and inflatable. Presentations include dressing to paddle safely and potential paddling hazards. Simple rescues are demonstrated by the instructor combined with the paddling skills practiced by students to maneuver safely and comfortably on still water. Designed as a stand-alone course, students desiring more intensive skills would proceed to Essentials of Coastal Kayaking or Basic Coastal Kayaking as successive courses, depending on interest and kayak type.

Course Overview:  The Introduction to Kayak Course is designed as a short program emphasizing safety, enjoyment and skill acquisition for entry level individuals in the public, private and commercial setting.

* This course is appropriate for all kayak craft, including traditional decked kayaks, inflatable’s and sit on tops. It is assumed the boats will be paddled solo. The instructor may want to limit this program to one type of craft but should announce this prior to the start of the course.

Guided Wilderness Day Hiking Trips on Mt Ascutney

This 6 - 7 hour course is a  rewarding and Comprehensive overview will provide you with the essential tools necessary so you may explore and enjoy the wilderness experience safety.  

Course Overview: Wilderness Day Hike, This is a 5.5 mil guided wilderness day hike on Mount Ascutney. Each hiker will learn about hiking footwear, outdoor clothing, trip planning, cooking, survival kits and first aid kits map and compass.

Guided Overnight Backpacking and Camping

This a guided 2 day/1 night backpacking adventure. It focuses on those skills necessary to enjoy overnight camping backpack and hiking. You will learn basic backpacking, hiking, mountain  camping, survival skills and map/compass reading   . Weekends only, 9am start, Intermediate level, 2 days/1 night

Course Overview: The guided overnight backpacking with camping overnight program, geared to give those interested in backpacking a comprehensive introduction to the activity, focuses on those skills essential to enjoying the wilderness safely.  We will cover  Introduction to your Backpack and Equipment, Proper Fitting and Packing techniques of your Backpack, Introduction to your Tent, Introduction to your Camp Stove and Cooking,  Proper Footwear and Outdoor Clothing, Cold wet and hot weather injuries and personal protection, First Aid kits and Survival kits,  Cleaning, sanitation, and other outdoor living skills,  Camp site selection, setup and take down,  Basic Map and Compass,  Preparation and Trip Planning,  Leave-no-trace camping and Camp fires, songs, and games.             

Cost: $300.00 /pre person, reservations required 5 person min.  

Course Runs on Monday - Tuesday:  9:00 Monday meet at Great River Outfitters, transport to Ascutney Mountain trails, over night camping and depart on Tuesday 6:00 pm, packing list and details provided once course is determined to run.

Guided 3 Day 2 Night Backpacking SURVIVAL Course

The Basic Survival Course: This is a Guided 3 Day 2 Night BackPacking Winter or Summer Survival with overnight camping course designed to give you the knowledge and skills to survive for a given length of time in an emergency situation away from immediate aid. All survival situations are life threatening but with knowledge it is possible to survive until either help arrives or self rescue can be achieved.

It takes much more than the knowledge and skills to build shelters, get food, make fires, and travel without the aid of standard navigational devices to live successfully through a survival situation. A key ingrediant in any survival situation is the mental attitude of the individual (s) involved. Having survival skills is important; having the will to survive is essential.

Cost: $400.00 /pre person, reservations required 5 person min.  

Course Runs on Monday - Wednesday:  9:00 Monday meet at Great River Outfitters and departs on Wednesday 6:00 pm, packing list and details provided once course is determined to run.

What to expect: This is a basic survival course & includes practical teaching, hands on implementation & survival scenarios to consolidate what has been learned and then 'self rescue!' These survival courses give you a fantastic insight into survival techniques and why & when to use them. It has been disigned and is delivered by the inspirational Craig Carmody who has had first hand experience of surviving in a wide range of conditions. These survival courses are about learning and expierencing but they are a basic survival course and so you can expect to start the day with a good wholesome breakfast, lunch dinner and provided supplements of food.
